초록
The Korean Marine Corps has performed excellently thanks to its unique culture and identity. However, understanding the Marine Corps' identity is necessary to prevent frequent bullying and hazing and transform the organization into an army fit for the 21st century. Nevertheless, previous research on the Marines’ group identity has been limited to theoretical discussions. This study investigated the Marine Crops' identity shared by active-duty Marines through in-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires and analyzed it from individual, relational, and organizational perspectives. The results are as follows: At the individual level, Marines perceived themselves as strong and special soldiers. At the relational level, Marines perceived each other as trustworthy comrades and a common fate community. This reflected the hierarchical nature of the Marine Corps. At the organizational level, Marines perceived the Marine Corps as a proud unit. This led to commitment to the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps’ group identity can be summarized as strength, comradeship, and commitment. Through this study, we understood the Marine Corps’ identity through the keywords of strength, comradeship. We suggested that this understanding should be reflected in further research, Marine education, prevention of bullying and hazing, and establishment of a 21st-century Marine Corps.
