한주 이진상의 “심즉리”설 일고찰 - 주재해야 하는 당위와 공부의 최종 경지 -

초록

This article examines Hanju Yi Jinsang’s doctrine of “simjeukri”(the mind as identical with principle) within the framework of his ontological foundation of li and gi(principle and material force) and his systematic account of Sim-seong(mind and human nature), and interprets it as encompassing both a principle of normativity and a stage to be attained through moral cultivation. To this end, it first analyzes Hanju’s understanding of the li–gi relationship, articulated through the notions of li as master and gi as resource and the single course of the manifestation of li, and on this basis clarifies his conceptualization of nature and feelings. It shows that Hanju defines human nature exclusively as original nature and understands the Four Beginnings and the Seven Emotions, as well as the human mind and the moral mind, as manifestations of li. The article further elucidates why Hanju conceives the mind as the locus of the governance of li, rather than as gi, through a critique of the Yulgok school’s thesis of “the mind as gi” and an analysis of the ontological structure of the mind. In particular, it argues that Hanju’s doctrine of simjeukri simultaneously implies a normative requirement grounded in the governing function of the mind and an ethical demand that represents a level to be realized through self-cultivation. In doing so, the article emphasizes that, in accordance with the Zhu Xi tradition, Hanju’s theory of simjeukri locates both the ground and the operative locus of moral practice in the mind.
