A Study on the Recognition of the Tumen River in North Korean Defector's Literature

초록

The purpose of this paper is to study the perception of the Tumen River in North Korean Defector's Literature. Through this, we will explore how meaningful the meaning of boundaries and cracks reflected in the placeability of the Tumen River can be when embodied in the chapter of North Korean defector literature. In Korean literature, the Tumen River was shaped several times as a representative border and border area, and literary works related to the image of the Tumen River were continuously published after the colonial period. After the 20th century, the meaning of the Tumen River was very important and fluid to the Korean people through colonial rule, war, and division. In particular, the literature on North Korean defectors and the perception of the Tumen River, which is being noted in our home country, are closely related to the situation of North Korean defectors, which has rapidly increased since the "March of the Pain" in the 1990s. With the number of North Korean defectors trying to escape the North Korean regime and head to South Korea or a third country via China exploding, the Tumen River has become a starting point and a boundary for such activities. In other words, it is producing various discourse as well as functions as a border. The purpose of this paper is to examine the diverse perceptions created by the Tumen River as a border and boundary, in essence, how boundaries and power are embodied in North Korean defector literature. As a result, this paper examined the recognition of the location of the Tumen River, which includes three North Korean literary works, including Jang Hae-sung's Tumen River, Yoo Young-gap's People Who Cross The River, and American writer Jeff Talarigo's The Ginseng Hunters.
