The Functions and Evolution of Nominal Marker “Ye(也)”
  • 조은정

초록

Previous studies have been carried out by focusing heavily on the usage of “也” as the modal particle at the end of a sentence. This study reveals that the character “也” from the ancient Chinese period is used differently in the middle of sentences, as compared to its use at the end of sentences. This study labels this as the nominal marker of “也”. Using evidence from transmitted texts and excavated texts, this study asserts that when “也” is used in the middle of a sentence in structures such as “人名+也,” or “(此/是+)普通名詞+也’, ‘NP/VP也者’, ‘主之謂+也’, ‘時間詞+也,” it is used as a subject, object, and adverbial. In contrast, when it refers to an identifiable or specific object or event, “也” is used as a nominal marker. Further, this study reveals that the nominal maker “也,” which functions as a definite reference, has undergone changes in the ancient Chinese period, lost its function towards the end of the period, and has subsequently almost disappeared after the Eastern Han Dynasty period.
