일제강점기 배재 럭비부의 활동

초록

This study aims to elucidate the activities of the Paichai Rugby Club during the Japanese colonial period. Inspired by the Japanese, Paichai established its rugby club in 1931. This had a positive impact on the sports infrastructure and sports philosophy at Paichai. After the establishment, Paichai enhanced its performance by engaging in competitive matches with external teams, conducting vacation training camps, and hosting rugby tournaments. By these, the club accumulated practical experience. Starting in 1935, Paichai began to distinguish itself by achieving excellent results. In 1936, the team secured its first victory at the 11th Joseon Singung Games(朝鮮神宮競技大會). Subsequently, Paichai won the championship in the All Japan Secondary School Rugby Tournament(全日本中等學校ラグビー選手權大會) in 1937. This victory, in particular, was regarded as a source of pride for the Joseon people and further fostered a sense of national pride. Meanwhile, as 1939 approached, Paichai's participation in competitions decreased, and their performance also slightly weakened. However, due to Japan's colonial sports policies, rugby eventually disappeared from Joseon, leading to the cessation of Paichai's rugby activities.
