PLANAR KA-BAND CP ANTENNA WITH GAIN ENHANCEMENT FOR LEO SATELLITE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

This paper proposed a high gain circularly polarized (CP) antenna that can be appropriate candidate for large phase array antenna for satellite communication. Various high gain antenna structures can be used for satellite communication. Actually, expansion to large array antenna is essential to implement sufficient communication performance such as high data rates, low loss and minimize mutual interferences. However, when designing planar modules with various ICs, the antennas mentioned above are limited due to the high profile, cost, fabrication complexity and structural problems. To overcome these problems, the high gain antenna with planar segmented patch structure is recently proposed. The performance of extending a planar segmented patch based antenna to array has not been analyzed yet. So, this paper proposes a planar compact high gain CP antenna based on the principles presented in the segmented patch structure antenna. The proposed 2x2 CP antenna was configured by sequentially rotating high gain single antenna with planar segmented patch structure by 90 degrees. The proposed CP antenna includes additional structure improvement to induce magnetic fields. The cross-shaped conductor and additional side conductor improve XPD performance and synthesize the overall magnetic field from the radiation patches. To verify the proposed CP antenna, two types of antennas composed of two-layer PCB and four-layer PCB were fabricated at 28 GHz. The measured bandwidth was 13.92 % and 23.95 %, respectively. Also, the measured peak gains of two-layer CP and four-layer CP were 14.4 dBic and 13.9 dBic, respectively.
