Rethinking the Concept of Citizenship: From Conditions of ‘Identity’ to Conditions of ‘Difference’

초록

This study raises the issue that the concept of citizenship in modern democracy has been constructed primarily based on uniformity and universality and discusses the need to reconstruct it in a way that acknowledges difference. Drawing on Deleuze's concept of 'difference-in-itself' as a theoretical foundation, the study argues that citizenship should be understood not as a fixed identity but as an evolving existence. In this context, difference should not merely be tolerated but recognized as an essential element of citizenship. This study critiques the limitations of consensus derived from identity-based recognition of difference within the framework of subject-centered identity and proposes a contextual concept of the public sphere based on provisional and conflictual consensus generated through difference itself. By doing so, it explores the possibility of operating modern democracy in a more inclusive and dynamic manner. These discussions contribute to fostering a public discourse structure that respects difference and ultimately enhances the sustainability of democratic society.
