Determinants of Enrollment in Elementary and Secondary Education: Evidence from Census Data, 1960-1990

초록

This paper analyzed the effects of demographic and household characteristics on enrollment rates in elementary and secondary education using seven different 1% census microsamples from 1960 to 1990. Sex, birth order, and the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the head of the household affected children’s school enrollment considerably in the 1960s, but many of the effects either decreased or disappeared by the 1990s, when elementary and secondary education was universalized. However, the head of the household’s marital status and economic background affected enrollment at the secondary education level until the 1990s. This paper also showed that, at least in the 1970s, a trade-off between the quantity and quality of children existed, as explained by the human capital theory.
