Why Do Middle-Aged and Older Workers Participate in Platform Work? : Focusing on Continuity with Prior Labor Market Experience

초록

This study asks why middle-aged and older workers participate in platform labor, focusing on the role of prior labor market experience. While such participation is rising in Korea, existing research has largely framed it as subsistence labour driven by economic vulnerability or emphasized the precariousness of platform work. Drawing on the argument that platform labour shares structural similarities with non-wage work, we ask whether older workers' participation reflects familiarity with work modes and skills shaped by prior experience. Using the 21st wave of the Korean Labour and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) for workers aged 50 and over, we estimated a hierarchical logistic regression with sociodemographic, economic, and prior labour market position variables entered sequentially. Economic factors had no significant explanatory power, whereas prior labor market position variables remained significant net of other controls. Participation was significantly higher among those previously in non-wage employment and among those with prior occupations in craft and machine-operating or managerial and professional positions. These findings suggest that older workers' platform labour participation is not simply an outcome of economic deprivation, but emerges at the intersection of prior work experience and platform labour's structural features.
