New leisure activities emerge alongside social development, but these activities may not necessarily fit into existing categories. Therefore, this study used the concept of "genre" to explore types of leisure activities, focusing on the characteristics of leisure activities rather than the activities themselves. The study surveyed 1,003 adults who freely participated in leisure activities, with participants recruited using a stratified multistage sampling method based on the sample extraction framework of the "2021 Population and Housing Census."The results showed that participants engaged in an average of four to five leisure activity "genres." In the types of sports, hobbies, and tourism activities, specific "genres" appeared most frequently, whereas in the types of cultural arts, relaxation, and social activities, the "genres" were evenly distributed. Additionally, across various leisure activity types, genres related to drama, variety shows, and health-related activities appeared at above-average levels in all leisure activity types. Finally, network analysis revealed that cultural activities had the highest centrality among leisure participation types, and the primary genre perceived through leisure activities was health. Specifically, the proportion of participants who felt health benefits was highest in the relaxation type. While the health genre was common across various leisure types, it was found that in the case of sports participation, only the health genre was perceived, indicating it as an essential element of leisure activities. These characteristics will provide important information for the detailed classification of future leisure activities.
