한국에서 집단적 항의행동의 확산과 ‘분쟁사회’의 격화: 집회⸱시위 참여자의 이념적 양극화와 정치적 당파성, 2013~2022

The Generalization of Protest Participation and the Intensification of ‘Contentious Society’: An Analysis of the Ideological Polarization and Political Partisanship of the Participants of Collective Protests in South Korea, 2013~2022

초록

This study examines whether and to what extent ideologically and politically motivated collective action has expanded to include conservatives in recent years. The primary research questions are as follows. First, do participants in recent collective protest activities have strong progressive or conservative ideological leanings, instead of just seeking collective interests in a narrower sense? Second, is there a trend of expanding or shifting participation in protest events from progressives to conservatives? Third, are partisan citizens who support a political party more likely to attend collective protests? To answer these questions, we conducted a binomial logistic regression analysis using the data from the Korea Institute of Public Administration’s ‘Korea Social Integration Survey’ from 2013 to 2022. The results showed that people with firm ideological convictions, either progressive or conservative ones, tend to participate more in protests; furthermore, since the middle of Moon Jae-in administration, there has been a trend of “activation of conservatives,” with conservatives outpacing progressives in participation in protests; additionally, individuals with pronounced ideological leanings, Irrespective of their progressive or conservative stance, exhibit active engagement in protests regardless of their party affiliation. In contrast, ideological moderates display differential patterns of protest attendance, Based on their political partisanship. These findings suggest a shift towards a contentious society in South Korea, where ordinary citizens increasingly engage in collective protests, and highlight the potential for political parties to exacerbate contentious politics by intervening in societal conflicts.
