Mediating Effects of Self-Esteem and Grit on the Relationship Between Parenting Stress and Parenting Behavior in Mothers of Infants : A Moderated Mediation Model

초록

This study aimed to examine the correlations among parenting stress, parenting behavior, self-esteem, and grit in mothers of infants. Specifically, it investigated the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between parenting stress and parenting behavior, as well as the moderated mediation effect of grit within this relationship. The study utilized data from the 1st main wave (2022) of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). The participants included 2,580 mothers with infants, and data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation analysis, along with PROCESS Macro Model 4 and Model 7. The findings are as follows: First, significant correlations were found among parenting stress, parenting behavior, self-esteem, and grit. Second, self-esteem demonstrated a significant partial mediating effect on the relationship between parenting stress and parenting behavior. Third, grit showed a significant moderated mediation effect in the relationship among parenting stress, self-esteem, and parenting behavior. These findings suggest the necessity of family and community-based support to alleviate parenting stress. Furthermore, the results highlight the need for programs that strengthen mothers’ self-esteem and for incorporating grit-enhancing content into parental education.
