This study identifies the core objective of education in the generative AI era as fostering ‘creative agency’―the capacity to critically assess and actively reconstruct AI-generated content. To explore this, the study examines how AI literacy(technical use) and media literacy(critical interpretation) interact in classroom settings and how they influence students’ creative engagement. A qualitative case study was conducted in a liberal arts course at a university in Seoul. Findings indicate that a cyclical structure involving AI use, critical reflection, and active reconstruction plays central role in cultivating students’ creative agency. Students’ active and independent creative practices were influenced more by instructional designs that facilitated critical engagement than by their technical proficiency. Based on this, the study proposes a ‘critical reflection- reconstruction’ model as a practical framework for designing education in the generative AI era.
