중국의 영어교육: 역사적 변천 과정과 현황
초록
This study investigates the introduction of English in China and its transformational trajectories along with Confucian tradition. Starting from China’s imperial examination system originated from the Sui Dynasty, China’s English education will be explained. Following the significant sociohistorical events in China, English education in China and the reactions of Chinese students are the main focus of this paper. First, the historical account of the early encounter with native English speakers and English communication from the 16th century will follow. The next section will focus on the characteristics of English education in the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and the People’s Republic of China. While going through all these major sociopolitical incidents, English education in China experienced significant vicissitude. After the 1978 Open Door Policy initiated by Deng Xiaoping (鄧小平), English has increasingly been instructed across China. This paper explicates the most recent trends of administering the College English Test (CET), the nationwide English test for college students. The changing perceptions toward English in China are also explained with specific reference to the employment of study-abroad returnee students to China.
