Effectiveness of a Narrative Group Intervention to Reduce Self-Stigma among Persons Having Psychosocial Disabilities

초록

Reducing self-stigma may improve health and quality of life, ultimately promoting the recovery of persons with psychosocial disabilities. This study evaluated the effect of a narrative group intervention for reducing self-stigma among persons with psychosocial disabilities. Fifty-three participants from five community mental health center were assigned to experimental (n = 30) and comparison (n = 23) groups. Those assigned to the experimental group participated in five to seven sessions of a narrative group intervention aiming to reduce self-stigma. Participants in experimental group who attended the intervention had significantly decreased scores for self-stigma at the end of the intervention, but the comparison group did not. Neither group experienced significant changes in recovery and self-esteem. This is the first study to empirically prove the effectiveness of a group intervention in reducing self-stigma of persons with psychosocial disabilities. The findings of the study can inform mental health professionals about useful information in program development and implementation.
