The purpose of this paper is to give a glimpse of the outlines and issues of “translinguistics” in discussions of semiotics ranging from F. de Saussure, E. Benveniste and R. Barthes. First of all, we examined the area of semiotics presented by F. de Saussure and contrasted it with the second-generation semiotics presented by Benveniste: ‘The translinguistic Analysis of Text and Works(l’analyse translinguistique des textes, des oeuvres)’. In the article “Sémiologie de la langue”, Benveniste discusses semiotic analysis of music and art which has a different system from langue. In this process, the system of linguistic signs occupies a superior position as an interpretation system, but it turns out that this system has a limit as the model for analyzing other systems such as daily life and culture. Barth sought to actively respond to these questions raised by Benveniste. Prior to the publication of “Sémiologie de la langue” in 1969, Barthes used already the term ‘translinguistic’ in his lecture, “Recherches sur la rhétorique” in 1965. Since then, he has used ‘translinguistics’ in his various works, in the same sense as Benveniste suggested. Barthes actively named and used the term “translinguistics” rather than the Banveniste. In particular, his writings cover not only general theories of semiotics but also social phenomena, texts, and works. In particular, from the fact that his works deal not only with general theories of semiotics, but also with social phenomena, texts, and works, Barthes is a scholar who directly practiced translinguistics.
