A Cognitive-Scientific Interpretation of Contemporary Media and Sensory Stimulation - Focusing on Marshall McLuhan’s Understanding Media -

초록

Taking Marshall McLuhan's distinction between hot and cool media as a theoretical starting point, this study examines the explanatory limitations of this framework within the contemporary media environment, and seeks to reinterpret it from a cognitive science perspective. The contemporary media environment, formed by advances in digital technology, is a complex combination of high information density, high-resolution sensory stimulation, interactivity, and immediacy, which cannot be fully explained by dichotomous classification of media into hot and cool categories. Therefore, this study divides the characteristics of media stimulation into information volume and resolution, and analyzes how users cognitively process and experience these stimuli through the cognitive scientific concept of processing fluency and cognitive wealth. The analysis shows that high-density and high-resolution sensory stimulation does not necessarily weaken user participation or passively make the media experience, but instead can act as conditions that enable low cognitive burden and continuous participation through processing fluency. This discussion suggests theoretical possibilities for expanding and reviewing McLuhan's media theory according to the contemporary environment.
