This study aims to examine differences in leisure expenditure and leisure satisfaction among married women based on their engagement in family caregiving, which is classified into child care, elderly care, and dual caregiving. Using data from the 9th wave (2023) of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF), a sample of 3,568 married women in their 30s to 50s was analyzed. To control for key socioeconomic characteristics, Coarsened Exact Matching (CEM) was applied, followed by t-tests to compare differences in leisure expenditure and satisfaction across caregiving groups. Regression analysis controlling for the same covariates was also conducted to ensure robustness. The findings indicate that women engaged in family caregiving reported significantly lower levels of both personal and household leisure expenditure, as well as lower leisure satisfaction, compared to non-caregivers. This suggests that caregiving negatively affects both material and emotional aspects of leisure. While leisure expenditure did not significantly differ across caregiving types, leisure satisfaction was significantly lower in the dual-caregiving group than in the elderly-caregiving group. On average, the dual-caregiving group showed the lowest levels of both leisure expenditure and satisfaction, highlighting the structural constraints of complex caregiving responsibilities. This study empirically confirms that engaging in family caregiving leads to a significant reduction in leisure expenditure at both the individual and household levels. These findings suggest that caregiving responsibilities impose structural constraints on women’s leisure resources and can affect both the quantity and quality of their leisure life. Accordingly, future leisure and caregiving policies should consider the family-level structure of resource allocation rather than focusing solely on individuals.
