Exploring Entry Motivations and Persistence Factors among Golfers

초록

[Purpose] This study explored the entry motivations, sustaining experiences, and key determinants of persistence among elite Korean collegiate golfers. [Method] An open-ended questionnaire was administered to 71 university golfers, and their responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. [Result] We identified seven dimensions (22 subfactors) of entry motivation—attraction discovery, talent recognition, health management, golf admiration, social encouragement, vocational value, and environmental familiarity—and five dimensions (17 subfactors) of sustaining experience—perceived skill improvement, self-directed practice engagement, successful course strategies, short-term goal attainment, and long-term objective achievement. Finally, persistence was driven by four dimensions (12 subfactors): intrinsic satisfaction, professional value, challenge orientation, and relational role. [Conclusion] These findings offer a foundation for developing targeted interventions to reduce athlete dropout and enhance satisfaction, and practical recommendations are provided in light of the study’s limitations.
