Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) on VO2max, HRmax and time to exhaustion in graded exercise testing

초록

The purpose of the study was examine the effects of tDCS on VO2max, HRmax and time to exhaustion (TTE) in graded exercise testing. Thirteen healthy recreationally active male participated in this counter-balanced design study and completed two times a graded exercise testing. After receiving either 20 min 2 mA anodal tDCS applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) or Sham stimulation on separate days. In the Sham condition, the same device was worn for 15 minutes without current. Gas exchange, HRmax and time to exhaustion(TTE) were monitored during graded exercise test. The results showed that no significant difference in VO2max(50.72±4 vs 48.42±3.83ml/kg/min for tDCS and Sham, respectively, p=.147) was observed between the tDCS and Sham conditions during the graded exercise test. And there was no differences among the two conditions in HRmax(198.92 ±5.28 vs 197.07±4.78beats/min for tDCS and Sham, respectively, p=.36). Finally, no significant difference in time to exhaustion(14.21±1.48 vs 13.26±1.22min for tDCS and Sham, respectively, p=.085) was observed between the tDCS and sham conditions. These findings demonstrate that stimulation of the M1 using transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) does not induce analgesic effect during exercise. These results play an important role in methodological advancement in developing the use of tDCS in maximal exercise performance.
