민중의 자기서사와 한국 노동현실의 증언 -전태일의 일기·수기·편지를 중심으로-

The labor forces of South Korea rapidly changed so that intellectuals and laborers formed solidarity, after Jeon Tae-il's suicide by self-burn. Jeon Tae-il greatly influenced not only labor movements but also a change to South Korea's literature. The country's literary research rarely paid attention to Jeon Tae-il's own writings itself. This study examined diaries, memoirs and letters left by Jeon Tae-il in a bid to delve into the world view pursued by Jeon Tae-il. How the writings left by Jeon Tae-il were disclosed to people was not specifically studied. This study recomposed the entire process by which Jeon Tae-il's diary was found in his morgue, was run in <Weekly Chosun> and <Sin Dong-A>, and was published under the name of 『Do Not Make My Death Futile』. This survey revealed that Jeon Tae-il's writings had been widely read and spread among laborers, such as Min Jong-deok and Lee Seung-cheol. Jeon Tae-il's writings significantly formed a sense of symbolic existence among ‘myriads of yet another Jeon Tae-il.’ It is meaninful to interpret the texts left by Jeon Tae-il in detail. Jeon Tae-il left an emotional diary of ‘love and lovelornness’ written from Feburay 14 - March 23, 1967. While undergoing ‘the pain of of self-withdrawn love,’ he changed his name from ‘Jeon Tae-il(全泰一)’ into ‘Jeon Tae-il(全泰壹).’ A name change means change of identity. Jeon Tae-il formed an identity of ‘studious laborer’ through his experience in lovelornness, and deeply realized human equal rights. Jeon Tae-il wrote two pieces of memoirs in 1969, which were his narration of his past growth process. Challenged by poverty, starvation and his father's domestic violence, Jeon Tae-il ran away from his home three times. As he wrote his personal experiences, he described his anger over social inequality and confrontational consciousness. Particularly, Jeon Tae-il well wrote 「His Letter to Friend Won-seop」. This letter descries the weak's world, and Jeon Tae-il who struggles to empathize with them. His empathetic heart is well described in this letter. Jeon Tae-il's diaries, memoirs and letters, which were written sincere-heartedly, touched his colleague laborers on an equal footing. An ordinary person's frank writing can move the hearts of other ordinary people because it has ‘equal emotion and expression,’ widening an empathic feeling. Jeon Tae-il's diaries, memories and letters positively expressed his consciousness of human equal rights, a solution to community problems of Pyeonghwa Market, design of his future through studying, and his empathy to the weak. He also positively expressed his world view of the weak ‘as part of my whole’ and ‘as part of the whole’ in his writings. Jeon Tae-il's thought can be summed up as passion about horizontal relationship, equalitarian human consciousness, and empathetic human relationship.
