ʻ조선족ʼ 기혼여성의 초국적 이주와 생애과정 변동: 시간성과 공간성의 교차 지점에서

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the changes in life course of married ʻJoseonjokʼ(Ethnic Korean in China) women, utilizing three theoretical perspectives of transnational feminism, transnationalism, and the life course theory. Based upon in-depth interviews of eight women in forties and fifties and field research in Joseonjok communities, we explored how their experiences of migration and settlement are intricately intertwined with transnational spatiality and personal temporality. Joseonjok married women, as sustaining the sense of belonging to their ethnic community which differs from China or Korea, had lived as chief breadwinner as well as care-giver. Even though the shifting national policy mainly led them to move across national boundaries, they acknowledged both leaving their own community and settling down another place as a normal life course and as a transitional life stage, and became active participants as migrant workers in Korea. Joseonjok married women, while integrated into the new global gendered division of labor, began to have some opportunities to reconstruct and reconceptualize womenʼs work and family relations through their transnational migration. From the perspective of the life course, married women in this study consider their current life in Korea as a temporary stage of their life course for the success of the next life stage, and link their future success to their childrenʼs future more likely happening in China. As a result, the spatiality of Korea and China transverses the temporality of past, present, and future, not as disconnected but as closely interconnected together through transnational migration.
