초록

The purpose of the paper is to investigate the effect of the Chines ODI onthe employment in Korea. In this paper, we first examine the process of theChinese ODI to Korea, its strategic motivation, and main characteristics. Then weempirically analyze the employment effect of the Chinese ODI, using time seriesdata from 2002. We find that the Chinese ODI has a statistically significant andpositive effect on the employment in Korea. However, the empirical resultssuggest that the size of the effect on employment is relatively small. Thisrelatively small effect from the Chinese ODI on the employment in Koreaindicates that the Chinese ODI into Korea is not large in the perspective of thewhole Chinese ODI. In addition to the relatively small size of the Chinese ODIto Korea, the employment replacement effect by the Korean-originated Chinese inKorea also contributed to the relatively small employment effect of the ChineseODI. Finally, we suggest several policy implications that could help increase theemployment effect from the Chinese ODI.
