Pragmatic Function of Code-switching between Korean and Japanese in Group Chat : What is Happening where Code-switching Takes Place?

초록

This study investigated the pragmatic function of the code-switching between Korean and Japanese, based on the data of a chat on KakaoTalk in which a Japanese teacher and five advanced Japanese language learners participated. First, the theory of accommodation was employed to analyze where code-switching would take place. The strategy of accommodation includes convergence and divergence, and the Japanese teacher and Japanese language learners were developing a sense of group and a sense of community through convergence for the other party’s language style. Meanwhile, the divergence in which the speaker did not adjust his or her style to the other, instead sticking to it could also be observed. Usually, code-switching took place between speakers here, and there was a feature of revealing the speaker’s image noticeably or emphasizing his or her personality. Next, this study paid attention to the fact that the Japanese language is written in Hangeul and analyzed the speakers’ psychological intentions shown there. As a result, it was noted that there were features of greeting, denial, emotional expression, and emphasis. In addition, there is also a humor feature that causes jokes or laughs, which is judged to be unique to written language. It is a feature to present fun to the other and further enrich the conversation.
