A Study on the Differences in the Way-Finding Ability by Leisure Sports Participation

초록

These days, while people use a global positioning system or a way-finding application for a smart phone as a means of finding a way, these methods are just instruments to assist quick adaptation to the rapidly-changing environment and it is doubted that they can become factors to improve the way-finding ability in practice. Leisure sports in which many people now participate have been found to give such benefits as joy and health; however, there is no research on the sense of direction (way-finding ability) useful in leading a life. So the purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the way-finding ability by the level and type of participation in leisure sports. For this purpose, two-way ANOVA was carried out to examine the differences in the way-finding ability by the level and type of leisure sports participation in the population of 273 students in total, who were at universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The results are as follows: First, spatial memory, a sense of direction, and visuospatial perception differed by participation time; only spatial memory differed by the number of participations; and spatial memory, a sense of direction, and the ability to use a map differed by the length of participation; therefore, the higher level of participation in leisure sports, the greater way-finding ability. Second, only spatial memory and a sense of direction differed by the participation type.
