Recontextualizing the Meaning of Artworks through Art Museum Exhibitions -A Case Study of Hilma af Klint Exhibitions-

초록

This study examines how museum exhibitions recontextualize the meaning of artworks and construct new interpretive frameworks, focusing on exhibition cases of Hilma af Klint. To this end, it reviews theoretical discussions on the meaning-producing function of exhibitions and the concept of recontextualization, and comparatively analyzes Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2018) and Hilma af Klint: A Proper Summons at the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (2024–2025). The analysis shows that the Guggenheim exhibition recontextualized af Klint’s work by presenting her as the “first abstract painter” and a “hidden pioneer,” thereby incorporating her into the linear developmental narrative of modernist art history. In contrast, the Busan exhibition, through hauntological temporality and a non-linear spatial configuration, presented her work as something to be rethought within a contemporary sensibility. These findings demonstrate that museum exhibitions are not neutral spaces for presenting artworks, but institutional apparatuses that reconstruct the historical position and meaning of artworks through specific exhibition interpretive frameworks and exhibition structures. This study is significant in that it concretely identifies the process through which museum exhibitions recontextualize the meaning of artworks, using the case of Hilma af Klint exhibitions.
