The Influence of Sensory Stimuli and Writing Modality on Memory Performance

초록

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of sensory stimulus modality (visual, auditory) and writing modality (handwriting, keyboard typing) on word recall performance and recognition accuracy. Methods: Twenty undergraduate students were divided into a visual stimulus group (n = 10) and an auditory stimulus group (n = 10). Each participant was presented with two word lists according to their chosen stimulus modality and performed both writing modalities. Immediately after each writing task, participants completed an oral recall test, followed by a d′ test to assess recognition accuracy. A delayed retention test was conducted to evaluate long-term memory. Oral recall and retention test results were analyzed using mixed-design ANOVA, while recognition accuracy (d′) was analyzed with independent-samples t-tests. Results: A significant main effect of writing modality was found in the recall task (p = .02), with no significant interaction between stimulus modality and writing modality. No significant differences were observed in recognition accuracy or retention test results across conditions. Conclusion: Recording methods need to be strategically chosen in accordance with learning objectives and context; keyboard recording may be effective in immediate retrieval situations, whereas handwritten recording may be more effective in skill training or personal feedback contexts.
