Current Status and Prospects of Russian TV Broadcasting Industry: Focusing on Changes in Broadcasting Digitalization and TV Viewing Style

초록

The modernization of the Russian broadcasting network and the infrastructure in preparation for the digital broadcast transmission was initiated by the action of the Federal Special Program called “The development of broadcasting in the Russian Federation: 2009~2018”. According to the data of the ‘Digital TV Research’, in 2017 the Global Pay TV market’s revenues amounted to 1,285.6 million, which increased 8.8% from the previous year. Currently, there are 42.7 million subscribers to Pay TV in Russia, and the service penetration rate exceeds 75%. In view of the population and audience situation of Russia, which can be switched to viewers at any time, the Russian broadcasting market is evaluated as more likely to grow than decline. In Russia, on the other hand, traditional TV screen viewers are getting more and more older, and the younger generation is showing a tendency to prefer a “second screen”. This is a driver for the restructuring of the Russian broadcasting market and the construction of new infrastructures. In this article, we will outline the process and current status of the Russian broadcasting market since 2010, when the modernization of Russian broadcasting started in real earnest. At the same time, we will roughly evaluate the characteristics of the Russian broadcasting market and future directions of its development and will suggest some points to consider when Korean broadcasting companies enter the Russian market.
