젠더관점을 통해 본 한국여성의 음주 : 결혼, 출산, 취업 및 성역할 태도를 중심으로

Most studies done in Korea regarding women and alcohol use had limitations in explaining the differences between male and female drinking habits. Most studies on women’s drinking mostly maintained the biological perspective, emphasizing the biological difference between both gender. However, in order to understand drinking behavior from a broader perspective, we need to pay attention to gender discussion surrounding women’s alcohol use. In strong patriarchical society, women’s behavior could be understood more in depth from the gender perspective. Based on this notion, this study attempted to analyze women’s drinking behavior in relation to marital status, employment status, number of young children, and sex role attitude. For this purpose, the 8th Welfare Panel data were utilized. A total sample of 8,962 adults were analyzed for the study. Study results showed that about 60% of men were drinkers versus 45% of women. In regards to drinking frequency, married men drank more frequently than non-married men, whereas married women drank less frequency compared to their counterparts. This point to the fact that marriage serves as an influencing factor for drinking behavior for women. Findings from multiple regression revealed that gender was a strong factor for individual’s drinking behavior when controlling for other factors. Interestingly, analysis of women showed that marital status, employment status, and sex role attitudes were predicting factors for drinking behavior. That is, being married, having more conservative sex role attitudes, and non-employment predicted less alcohol use and frequency for women. For men, this relationship was not significant.
