초록
Patti Kim’s A Cab Called Reliable delineates Ahn Joo Cho, a Korean-American, who undergoes an identity crisis in dealing with conflicts between the norms prescribed by different social institutions, such as the family and the school. This paper examines how the protagonist grapples with the experience of growing up to be a self-reliant adult. In constant conflict with different cultural norms overdetermined by her race, ethnicity, gender, and class, Ahn Joo experiences several layers of oppression and alienation, adapting herself to the mainstream American society. Earlier in the narrative, she often employs silence to resist racist treatments by the dominant discourse of the society, but she later grows to express herself through creative writing of her own narrative. She finally reaches a reconciliation with her father and Korean cultural influences and finds her own voice to articulate what she wants to express.
