초록
This study aims to compare and analyze the revisions made in the first edition (1995) and the third revised edition (2022) of Eun Hee-kyung’s novel “The Present of a Bird,” focusing on the changes in the author’s perspective and the literary significance of these revisions. Since its initial publication, it has been consistently praised by critics and readers alike, culminating in its re-release as a commemorative 100th-print edition in 2022. This study examines the narratives, character depictions, and structural changes between the two editions to uncover how these revisions influence the interpretation and meaning of the text. Previous research has highlighted the novel’s characteristics as a coming-of-age story and its effective portrayal of a cynical female protagonist from the perspective of the narrator, Jinhee. However, the changes in the revised edition have slightly diminished the narrator’s cynicism and recognition of societal taboos, which were vividly depicted in the original edition. The moderation of direct and controversial expressions, along with the removal of passages related to the mother and aunt’s abortion, reduces the narrator’s role and weakens the narrative tension, thereby diluting the novel’s critical message. Revised editions reflect a process of preserving the original text’s identity and meaning, while reflecting the demands of the times and the author’s evolving consciousness. From this perspective, this study critically examines how the revisions of “The Present of a Bird” weaken the original text’s critique of patriarchal society. Through this analysis, it sheds light on the literary significance and limitations of the revisions, clarifies its contemporary implications, and re-examines the universal value of the work.
