Examining the Incongruence Between Journalists and News Audiences in the Evaluation of News Quality

초록

This study explores the existence of differences in the evaluation of news quality between journalists and news audiences by analyzing representative surveys of journalists and the public in South Korea. Specifically, we examine the perceptual gap regarding seven issues believed to contribute to the perceived decline in news quality, including misreporting, abusive content, lack of impartiality, and fake news. The results suggest that journalists perceive these problems as more serious than do news audiences. Furthermore, individuals with more liberal political orientations tend to view these problems as more serious than their conservative counterparts. However, the association between political ideology and perceptions of these problems was more pronounced among news audiences than among journalists. Our findings contribute to the literature by providing empirical evidence of existing differences in the evaluation of news quality between journalists and the public. The results also suggest that the commercialization and tabloidization of news media may accelerate the decline of public trust in journalism. Implications of these findings are discussed.
