레트로 및 뉴트로 현상에 관한 연구 동향과 인터넷 신문기사의 의미 분석

This study aims to provide insight on the unique form of “regression” in Korean society by examining the trends of recent Retro and Newtro studies and analyzing the tone of Internet newspaper articles. Studies related to Retro and Newtro overwhelmingly originate from the arts and physical education fields. Among them, this research it iprominent in fields with clear concrete aspects such as costumes, design, and broadcasting. Although Retro and Newtro are evidently perceived as “cultural phenomena,” the literature mainly focuses on practical discussions such as brand research and marketing strategies. Therefore, research on the analysis of these trends’ underlying cause and the study of liberal arts is insufficient. Regarding internet newspaper articles, discussions that originally regarded Retro movements began to shift toward Newtro in 2019. In particular, there were numerous mentions of fashion and food, as younger generations were using communication methods such as social networking services (SNS) to reinvent Retro into their own “hip” and novel culture. Newtro is a specific phenomenon which must be analyzed independently from Retro, and is expected to be useful in interpreting the cultural codes of younger generations. Currently, studies and newspaper articles related to Retro or Newtro adopt a one-size-fits-all perspective, merely focusing on “representation” and “borrowing.” However, in the absence of a forum for individualized intergenerational discussions, it may be impossible to establish their position as proper cultural phenomena. It is believed that more precise and fundamental liberal arts studies should be conducted.
