초록

This study examined the validity of the Korean Countertransference Factor Inventory (CFI), which is a scale that assesses the countertransference management abilities of therapists. For this purpose, it reviewed recent research on the adaptation and validation of the CFI, and conducted meta-analyses of studies using this scale. Based on the findings, the Korean CFI showed significant correlations with countertransference behaviors, counseling results, and working alliance. However, when the rater was the client, these correlations were not significant. The Korean CFI also revealed a significant correlation with the social desirability and counselor development level scales. These results indicate that when the Korean CFI is rated by therapists, it may be influenced by social desirability and that the correlations with the counseling process may represent a halo effect. Additionally, the number of factors in the Korean CFI rated by therapists varied between the studies (ranging from 3 to 5), while the number of excluded items also differed (ranging from 6, 14, and 25). However, in all the factor analysis studies reviewed, the items regarding “empathy” and “case conceptualization” were combined into a single factor. Altogether, the following research directions were proposed. First, when employing the Korean CFI, it is important to determine whether the item expressions adequately reflect the cultural context and meaning. Second, appropriate sample sizes and statistical analyses should be applied to examine the construct validity. Third, the halo effect caused by the rater should be controlled, and correlations with related variables should be carefully evaluated. Finally, since this study was based on previously published empirical research, it includes the limitation of being post hoc. In this regard, future research should empirically verify the validity of the conclusions in this study by collecting actual data.
