The Effects of Social Relationships on Subjective Well-Being Trajectories in Youth: A Latent Growth Modeling Analysis

초록

This study examined longitudinal trajectories of subjective well-being during youth and the role of social relationships in shaping these developmental changes. To this end, data from Waves 1 to 6 of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) 2018 were analyzed using Latent Growth Modeling for a cohort of first-year middle school students. The results indicated that all sub-dimensions of subjective well-being followed distinct quadratic growth trajectories. Life satisfaction and happiness declined steadily over time, whereas depression showed no significant mean-level change but exhibited substantial inter-individual variability in its developmental course. Social relationships consistently functioned as buffering factors. More positive relationships with parents, peers, and teachers were associated with slower declines in life satisfaction and happiness, while positive relationships with parents and peers were linked to a slower increase in depression. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need to redesign an integrated support system for youth well-being at the national level and to expand relationship-based programs within community youth centers.
