초록
This article diverges from the conventional practice of interpreting Jang Jeong-shim's poetry primarily from a Christian perspective, instead analyzing the representation of Joseon and the meaning of Hangul poetry creation as manifested in her second poetry collection, 『Geumseon』. Chapter 2 elucidates the meaning of Joseon as symbolized by the ‘Mugunghwa’ (rose of Sharon) and ‘Geumseon’ (the strings of the gayageum). The Mugunghwa represents Joseon's unyielding will and hopeful future, while Geumseon serves as both a traditional instrument embodying Joseon's sensibilities and a symbol of Jang's poetic theory. Chapter 3 examines the spatiality in 『Geumseon』, focusing on ‘Gaeseong’. Historical places and relics frequently appear in Jang's poetry, evoking pre-colonial history and reinforcing national identity. Chapter 4 explores Jang Jeong-shim's support for the Joseon Language Society's Hangul Orthography Unified Proposal and her advocacy for Hangul use, clarifying her intent in publishing 『Geumseon』 in Hangul. Chapter 5 highlights how her ideas extended to the enlightenment of women and children. In 『Geumseon』, poems frequently praise mothers and actively interpret children as symbols of Joseon's future. The study confirms that Jang's belief in teaching Hangul to women—enabling them to educate their children—was a driving force behind her Hangul poetry movement.
