Results and Tasks of Re-examination on Wooden Documents Excavated from Gyeongju

초록

This article summarizes the results and the tasks of re-examination on wooden documents excavated from Gyeongju based on new photographs shoot by Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage. In 2011, Character Dictionary for Korean Wooden Documents included some new wooden documents excavated from Anapji pond. But it was not mentioned when and how they were discovered, and their existence has not been known to researchers afterward. We confirmed that they had been preserved as samples at Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and were identified as the wooden documents in 2008. On the other hand, the whereabouts of the three wooden documents included in Excavation Report of Anapji pond(1978) are currently unknown. They must be rediscovered by museum storage excavation. Newly taken color photos and infrared photos have a higher resolution than existing photos, and went through an excellent modifying process. Despite the improvement in the quality of the photographs, there are many cases where the texts were less visible than in the previous photos due to the change in the state of the wooden documents themselves. Infrared photos of Ancient Wooden documents of Korea, taken earlier, are still important for deciphering. However, some of them seem to have been touched up excessively, so it is necessary to be careful to use them. There were also several new discoveries in the content of wooden documents. First, some advisory panels suggested that the government office name ‘洗宅’, which was previously identified from the wooden documents of the Anapji pond, can be read even in the wooden documents excavated from the Wolseong Moat. ‘龍王’ seen in the wooden documents from Hwawangsanseong Frotress in Changnyeong and Temple Site known as Inyongsa in Gyeongju was also identified in the wooden document from Anapji pond. In addition, the name of a temple and the name of a monk written in the wooden documents from the temple site known as Hwangbok-sa were revised to ‘上[率]寺’ and ‘廻談 沙弥’. It is expected that various researches on wooden documents of Gyeongju will be activated based on the new photographs.
