롤링스톤즈(The Rolling Stones)의 1960년대 음악에 나타나는 블루스 전통의 양상들

“The British Invasion,” a cultural phenomenon that struck the US in the 1960s, triggered the blues revival and helped white youth to re-evaluate African-American music during a racially discriminatory period. The Rolling Stones was a central force for this cultural wave. With a comprehensive understanding of the cultural background of the music genre, the group was devoted not only to imitating the blues sound but also to reinterpreting its cultural value as a ‘rebellion’ against the dominant white society of both UK and US. The transfusion of blues attitudes into white youth gave rise to an influential impact on society. Many Anglo-American youngsters regarded the blues theme and argots in the songs of Rolling Stones as an explicit expression of refusal of traditional values, which ultimately contributed to igniting the youth movement at that time. In this context, this paper aims to explore how the Rolling Stones approached and repackaged the blues out of a social context, by analysizing the lyrics and themes of the songs released in the 1960s. In so doing, this paper seeks to illustrate that the transatlantic blues, initiated by intellectually curious white British youth, is a significant example of popular music truly reflecting society, fueled by the genuine potential of the consumer public.
