Empathy and Executive Function as Mediators Between Grit and School adaptation in Middle School Students with High Intelligence

초록

This study aimed to examine the structural relationships among grit, empathy, executive function, and school adaptation in middle school students with high intelligence. Data were drawn from the 13th and 15th waves of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), with a final sample consisting of 138 students possessing an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 130 or higher. The analysis of the mediating effects of empathy and executive function on the relationship between grit and school adaptation revealed that grit showed significant positive associations with empathy and executive function. In addition, the indirect path from grit to school adaptation through empathy was significant, whereas the direct path was not. These findings indicate that empathy functioned as a significant mediator in the relationship between grit and school adaptation among middle school students with high intelligence. The findings suggest that supporting empathy, along with grit, may be important for the school adaptation of high-IQ students.
