Questioning the Meaning of Normative 'Home': Youth Experience Living in Gosiwon

초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze cultural aspects of housing inequality in South Korea, particularly focusing on youth experiences to live in gosiwon. Living in gosiwon, youths continue to conflict and negotiate with the meanings and material realities between independence and discipline, dwelling and shifting, belonging and unbelonging, and identification and differentiation, as confronting various spatial, temporal, and visual limits of gosiwon. Gosiwon as a place of ‘un/doing’ home, shows the complex and multi-layered routes of the ways in which youths reside and move, as well as their dreams and frustrations in-between ‘home.’ The meanings of ‘home,’ shared and experienced by youths changing from one underhousing tracks to another, are fluid and disruptive between the impossible reality to possess their own ‘normal house’ in Seoul and the constant anxiety about longing for it. Therefore, experiences of unstable young generation living in gosiwon ironically reveal the social anxiety about ‘normal home’ within which increasing economic gap in Korea deeply embedded.
