디지털 애니메이션의 낭만주의적 특성에 대한 연구

초록

This study is about the aesthetics of digital image, and the purpose of the study is to examine the contemporary digital animation in the term of ‘Romantic(ism)aesthetic.’ Since the previous examinations on the subject have been mainly carried out from the realism perspective. In the case of Animation, the digital technology was introduced as a new aesthetic innovation to create realistic images. Following the rule of western perspective, the representation technology of film is based on Rationalism. In other words, objective and precise representation of the thing and space is central torational/modern view of the world. Artistic flow of Romanticism desired to be freed from such a modern view of the world and rejected Neoclassicism and Rationalism. This study focuses on the digital animation to examine the tendency of Romanticism and the issues around it. Firstly, this article discussed existing idea about romantic trend in the traditional animation, to suggest and construct the theoretical background. After that,the characteristics of digital technology as technological sublime and ‘the uncanny’were discussed. Second, digital animations were analyzed in terms of style, such as stage lighting, fine detail, dynamic spatial composition, camera movement. And the result were discussed to examine how the images are beyond imitating appearances and how they are connected to the Romanticism aesthetics. Finally, the current theoretical values and meanings of romanticism of digital animation were examined. Through this examination, the doubt of ontological status and the difficulties of creative innovation of contemporary animation was identified. In that sense, digital animations are finding way to create new aesthetics through the expression of new emotions, sublime aesthetics,and dynamic spaces, etc.. It is as much innovative imagination/artistic attempt as 18∼19 century Romanticism.
