A Study on the Characteristics of the Media Facade Expression in Creating the Urban Image

초록

Creating the urban image is building the cultural and economic potential of the city and therefore is essential for the competitiveness of city. Previously, the communication in city was mostly one-way and functional, but recently, the city has evolved into a space for communication and interaction with human. Recently, cities are serving the role of media in the digital era as the buildings worthy of becoming a landmark of city are decorated and new images are created in the monotonous urban environment, as well as nightscape lighting that combines the science and art of lighting. Thus, there has been a heightened interest in media facade which represents new potential of city as an interface for communication with the public. The purpose of this study was to validate the interactivity with urban image based on the understanding of the concept of media facade, the characteristics of expression, and case analysis. To achieve the objective of this purpose, 8 buildings in Korea and abroad, which had the media facade structure, were selected, and the case analysis was conducted by classifying the relevant items into several types, i.e., the display, contents, materials, and method of communication based on the location, date of production, and characteristics of expression. The findings of this study showed that the media facade had the information conveyance media function facilitating the communication among the city, space and human, had more value than the use of the facade of building as the displace space, served the function as part of new urban culture and provided symbolic image and therefore could have the function of media presenting the urban image, not merely providing the illumination to the building.
