초록
This study examines the influence of bully victimization on symptoms of emotional distress among multicultural adolescents in South Korea. Focusing on the level of social withdrawal and loneliness as indicators of emotional status, we examine how one’s experience of being bullied at school increases the likelihood of feeling distressed. Utilizing data provided by the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study(MAPS), a panel data of multicultural students at their grades from 5 to 12, our analyses from random-effect ordered logit regression models suggest that being a victim of bullying is positively associated with one’s levels of emotional distress including withdrawal and loneliness, even after controlling for number of friends and support from parents and teachers. More importantly, we find that social withdrawal have both mediating and moderating effects on one’s level of individual loneliness. In other words, loneliness that multicultural adolescents experience from bully victimization is mediated and exacerbated through one’s social withdrawal. These results provide policy implications to alleviating emotional distress among multicultural adolescents in South Korea.
