초록

This paper is to find out the semantic structure of Sijo by focusing on the flow of idea on Sijo. I think that to make Sijo, one of the Korea’s traditional literature be passed down to next generation of Korean people and get developed requires the detailed study on its semantic structure. It is because the semantic structure is the essential target of study as it is related to both the form and substance of the literature genre and that this study would be ultimately related to the search of the essence of the literature. As the semantic structure is important, there have been a lot of researches on it. But the researchers have not still agreed on the Sijo’s semantic structure, claiming that each researcher claiming different Sijo’s structure such as forms of 2 stages, 3 stages and 4 stages. So, I thought that we have put more emphasis on the flow and changes of idea in analyzing the Sijo rather than on the form of the text to get more detailed study of semantic structure of Siga literature. Though Sijo has 3 sections, it can be classified to the 2-stage works and 3-stages if we look at them focusing on the flow and change of theme of the Sijo. On the premise of that, I started my study. First, the 2-stage structure of Sijo was made by the noblemen who took up it as their main literature. The noblemen’s divided idea into participating in the politics or living in the rural area not participating in the politics and their value of searching the merging of the principle agent and target were reflected in the 2-stage Sijo. I found out that 56 works out of 56 (86%) fall on this category. This type showed that the theme of Sijo is repeated or emphasized in initial part and medium part and then directly goes to the finishing part for ending. On the other hand, the 3-stage structure has a lot of things to be researched. This style is mainly used to convey the educational thoughts to people. In this 3-stage structure, the Sijo is structured in a way that the theme goes up from initial part through middle part to the ending part in a gradual and connected form. I found out that 8 Sijo out of 56 (14%) fall on this category. To get more followers on this discussion, I think that more studies should be performed for more Sijo works. In addition, I think that more researches should be focused on the differentiated themes or the change points which are the criteria for analyzing the works. More studies are required in the future.
