Verb-copying sentence is the Chinese sentence format that copies verb so that the former verb has object, and the latter verb has complement. In case a complement is after a verb in the Chinese language, the position of the object is unstable, and in some cases complement even excludes the object. Verb-copying sentence is the sentence format that could resolve this contradiction between a complement and an object. Verb-copying sentence is superior in productivity, but the frequency of use is relatively lower, in comparison with other sentence forms in parallel structure such as ‘把’construction or patient-subject clause. This paper analyzed that unpredictability deviating from the speaker’s prediction or normal result and the verb-copying sentence representing distant causality relation are the most typical verb-copying sentence, based on the Proto-type theory. In addition, even an identical verb-copying sentence shows differences according to the semantic orientation of the complement. While verb-copying sentence with semantic orientation of complement as an agent is the most typical verb-copying sentence, the verb-copying sentence with semantic orientation of complement as a patient is the verb-copying sentence belonging to the marginal category, with much less frequency of use than verb-copying sentences in other forms. This is because the verb-copying sentence with semantic orientation of complement as a patient is often replaced by the parallel structure, in other words,‘把’construction or patient-subject clause, due to the necessity in meaning or utilization. The case of the semantic orientation of complement as a verb can be regarded as the intermediary verb-copying sentence, at the middle of the verb-copying sentence with semantic orientation as an agent and the verb-copying sentence with semantic orientation as a patient, in the meaning of sentence structure and frequency of use thereof.
