Chateaubriand's civilized egalitarianism and nationalism

초록

This study examined the meaning of Chateaubriand's thought in the mixing of various thoughts on the accepting of others and colonization. The problem of civilization's progress and origin was the starting point of the Westerners’ reflection on the non-Western world. Westerners did not find non-Western people in their own identity, but in a Western centrism they identified Indians as wild savages or good savages. Chateaubriand realized the misconstruction of the original thought when he traveled to North America. He boasted of anti-colonialism, accused the immorality and violence of the Westerners who destroyed the native civilizations of the Indians, and criticized their colonial process of seizure. But he also advocated France's colonial holding as a basis for its glory and development. At the root of his dualistic and contradictory attitude in the colonial problem was the liberal thought of the time when exclusive nationalism was inherent.
