A Study on the Issue of Visibility in Design Seoul Project - Focusing on the Case of Gangnam Street -

초록

The city of Paris experienced the expansion of urban visibility by Haussmannization in the 19th century. The straight roads facilitated a city landscape through the principle of perspective, and they arranged a series of street shops, stimulating the visual attention of the crowd. The success of public media such as newspapers and magazines was possible by this hugh crowd of Paris. The importance of urban visibility, which was exemplified by the 19th century Paris, proves to still effectively remain as a sense to change the city space nowadays. The Design Seoul Project can be considered as an exemplary model for this. But visibility is not merely confined to the alleged appearance of space. It is also closely connected with various elements that constitute the city. And thereby, the visibility of a city space must be analyzed in terms of various contexts surrounding it. With this view in mind, this article attempts to discuss the Kangnam Street as a product of The Seoul Design Project, by way of Henri Lefebvre’s political economy. More specifically, the arguments deal with the social contexts by which the change of visibility through The Seoul Design Project can be understood, and they also deal with the effects that can be brought by the combination of a city space with its visibility.
