This paper proposes a virtual rolling model to reduce the run time (calculation time) when finite element method is used to compute the temperature on the roll surface in hot rolling. Even though two-dimensional finite element analysis with implicit time integration is used, the run time is significant since a lot of iterations are required in analyzing the plastic deformation of the strip inside the rolls. Fundamental idea considered in the virtual rolling model is to make use of the similarity between hot rolling and a disc-brake system used in the automobile. The disc corresponds to the roll and the pad corresponds to the strip. The virtual rolling model was applied to the finishing stand unit in a hot strip mill in Hyundai Steel Co. in Korea. Results show that the difference between the virtual rolling model-based surface temperature variations and the actual rolling model-based surface temperature variations is less than 0.5%. The run time was reduced from 360 hours to 10 hours when the virtual rolling model was adopted. © 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
