In-betweenness of Theater as Metaxis: Rimini Protokoll’s Android Performance Uncanny Valley

초록

A multimedia lecture performance/monodrama Uncanny Valley (2018-), which conceived and directed by Stefan Kaegi of Rimini Protokoll, is enacted by animatronic android as a living author, playwright and novelist, Thomas Melle. On the stage, a robotic replica performs live as Melle who has bipolar disorders, while on the projection screen, Melle plays himself in his making of anroid-documentary video. Presented as a mixed reality in a black box theater, uncanny dynamics between Melle’s screen presence - his synchronized ‘theater machine’, android/Melle’s self-defensive acting - voyeuristic audiences, reality of image - image of reality is unraveled. In this irreconcilable dissonance between everyday life/art, audience/stage, body/consciousness, real/virtual, actuality/lived experience, I/Me, the objectified other android/Melle is fluctuating as ‘metaxic’ being. This paper aims to probe the problem of otherness in these polarized relationships, within the context of post-truth, post-media reality.
