초록
This study aims to analyze the meaning and function of symbols and rituals in Catholic liturgy as forms of religious media. Focusing particularly on the Triduum liturgies (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil), which represent the culmination of the Catholic liturgical year, this research employs qualitative methods to examine the symbols and actions present in these celebrations. Specifically, the study integrates (1) participant observation and photographic analysis of the Triduum liturgies, (2) in-depth interviews with 10 liturgical participants, and (3) a comprehensive review of religious media theories and Catholic liturgical documents. The symbols (such as the cross, candles, water, and fire) and rituals (including the Washing of the Feet, Veneration of the Cross, and the Lighting of the Paschal Candle) found in the Triduum are not mere ceremonial procedures, but function as religious media conveying messages of faith. These symbols and actions integrate visual, auditory, and physical elements to provide believers with a holistic experience, serving as means of communication that reinforce the identity and cohesion of the faith community. By analyzing religious rituals from a media perspective, this study suggests new possibilities for interdisciplinary research between religious studies and media studies, and contributes to establishing a theoretical foundation for the development of religious communication methods in the digital age.
